Company Analysis Dow And Dupont Essay - 957 Words

Dow and DuPont plan to close on a merger transaction in the second half of 2016. After the merger, they plan to spin off the company into three separate independent, publicly traded companies. The first will focus on global agriculture, the second on material science, and the third on specialty products driven by innovation and technology. The companies predict many benefits including unique growth strategies, increased market value due to cost collaborations, superior solutions, greater and expanded offerings for customers, and an attractive investment profile. (A Powerful Combination Unlocking Exceptional Value, 2016) These are only some of the ways the many stakeholders could be affected. Their stakeholders include shareholders, employees, customers, supplies, governments, communities, and the environment. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is the agency in the U.S. that performs this monitoring and regulation. It is still uncertain whether the Dow DuPont transaction will be accepted by the FTC. Cloning Essay Research Paper Cloning What is free essay sample

Cloning Essay, Research Paper Cloning What is a Ringer? A ringer is a group of genetically indistinguishable cells. For illustration, tumours are ringers of cells inside an being because they consist of many reproduction of one mutated cell. Another type of ringer occurs inside a cell. Such a ringer is made up of groups of indistinguishable constructions that contain familial stuff, such as chondriosomes and chloroplasts. Some of these constructions, called plasmids, are found in some bacteriums and barms. Techniques of familial technology enable scientists to unite an animate being or works cistron with a bacterial or yeast plasmid. By cloning such a plasmid, geneticists can bring forth many indistinguishable transcripts of the cistron. Uses of Cloning: Research workers said the cloning of animate beings, particularly those that have been genetically modified in certain ways, could hold a figure of medical, agricultural, and industrial applications. For illustration, cloning could ensue in the mass production of genetically modified cowss that secrete valuable drugs into their milk. But the cloning of animate beings indicated that it might besides be possible to clone worlds. Much of the populace expressed repugnance toward the chance of human cloning, and some politicians vowed to criminalize it. Its advocates, nevertheless, saw human cloning as a manner to assist people, such as by leting sterile twosomes to hold kids. Early Scientific Experiments of Cloning: Scientists have long been intrigued by the possibility of unnaturally cloning animate beings. In fact, people have known since antediluvian times that merely merely cutting them into two pieces can clone some invertebrates, such as angleworms and starfish. Each piece grows into a complete being. The cloning of craniates ( animate beings with back castanetss ) is much more hard to clone. The first measure in the cloning the complex beings ( craniates ) came in the 1950 # 8217 ; s with experiments done on toads. In 1952, Robert Briggs and Thomas King, biologists at the Institute for Cancer Research ( now the Fox Chase Cancer Center ) in Philadelphia, developed a cloning method called atomic organ transplant, or atomic transportation, which was foremost proposed in 1938 by the German scientist Hans Spemann. In this method, the karyon # 8211 ; the cellular construction that contains most of the familial stuff and that controls growing and development # 8211 ; is removed from an egg cell of an being, a process known as enucleation. The karyon from a organic structure cell of another being of the same species is so placed into the enucleated egg cell. Nurtured by the foods in the staying portion of the egg cell, an embryo ( an being prior to birth ) begins turning. Because the embryo # 8217 ; s cistrons came from the organic structure cell # 8217 ; s nucleus, the embryo is genetically indistinguishable to the being from which the organic structure cell was obtained. In their experiments, Briggs and King used organic structure cells from frog embryos. From these cells, they were able to bring forth several polliwogs. Animal Cloning: Wilmut and his co-workers took mammary-gland cells from an grownup sheep and placed them in a solution that einsteinium entially starved them of foods and caused them to halt turning for a few yearss. Then, with a flicker of electricity, they fused each mammary cell with an enucleated egg cell. The ensuing cells were allowed to turn into embryos, which were so transplanted into alternate female parent Ewe ( female sheep ) to finish their development. About 300 efforts at this technique resulted in failure for the scientists. Some eggs did non accept mammary cell nuclei, embryos that were produced died, and lambs that were born were unnatural and died. But one lamb, seemingly healthy, survived the process: Dolly, who was born in July 1996. Mouse Cloning: At the University of Hawaii they created more than 50 mice utilizing grownup cells in a fluctuation of the cloning process used with Dolly ( the foremost ringer ) . There were two major differences between this mouse technique and the Dolly technique that allowed the Hawaii scientists to accomplish such singular success. The first difference was that the Hawaii research workers used of course hibernating cumulus cells ( cells that surround eggs in ovaries ) in their process. Because these cells were non turning, they could be easy reprogrammed indoors enucleated egg cells without hungering them in a particular solution, as was necessary with the bag cells used in the Dolly process. Second, alternatively of electrically blending a organic structure cell with an enucleated egg cell, as was done in the Dolly technique ; the Hawaii research workers used an extra-fine acerate leaf to shoot the karyon from a cumulus cell into an enucleated egg cell. Because this technique did less harm to the egg than did electrical merger, it increased the opportunity that the ensuing cell would develop into a healthy embryo. Human Cloning: The same processs used to clone sheep and cowss could theoretically be used to clone worlds. However, human cloning would likely be more hard than sheep or cattle cloning, because the cells of human embryos start bring forthing proteins at a comparatively early phase. Therefore, there would non be as much clip for the egg cytol to reprogram a transplanted karyon. However, the successful 1998 cloning of mice, which besides start bring forthing proteins at an early embryologic phase, strongly indicated that this job could be overcome in worlds. Practical Purposes of Cloning: The mass production of animate beings engineered to transport human cistrons for the production of certain proteins that could be used as drugs ; the proteins would be extracted from the animate beings # 8217 ; milk and used to handle human diseases. The mass production of animate beings with genetically modified variety meats that could be safely transplanted into worlds. The mass production of farm animal that have been genetically modi-fied to possess certain desirable traits. The prolongation of endangered species. The production of offspring by sterile twosomes. The production of offspring free of a potentially disease-causing familial defect carried by one member of a twosome ; the person without the defect could be cloned.

Manichism In Economics Essays - Economic Theories,

Manichism In Economics The Manichaean character of economics. Charles Kindleberger. Abstract: Economics is said to have adopted a certain degree of dualism. None of its tenets have been absolute in terms of social effectiveness. To survive in an economic system, rules must be enforced to ensure the peace. There are times when pluralism is good for a society as a way recognizing social differences. However, there are times, such as war, when the rule of a central authority is preferred. Laws in economics are hardly permanent since such regulations are enacted and enforced only when the need arises. Full Text: COPYRIGHT 1999 M.E. Sharpe, Inc. Are there any absolute answers in economics? This international trade economist and economic historian has his doubts. The answer to most questions is "It depends." Manichaeus, as we all know from the Oxford dictionary; was a Persian philosopher of the third century A.D., whose system held some sway throughout the Roman empire and Asia until the fifth century (with some elements lasting to the thirteenth). He believed in dualism, the coexistence of good and evil, with Satan coequal with God. I suggest that economics has a heavy dose of dualism, though I hesitate to characterize views that differ from mine as evil or satanic. In the first edition of Economics: An Introductory Analysis the only one I read when I was teaching the introductory course - Paul Samuelson wrote that when one is offered a choice, it is not legitimate to say "both." I hesitate to differ from my esteemed colleague, but "both" is often a correct answer, as occasionally is "neither." Is one supposed to believe in Say's law that supply creates its own demand, or Keynes's law that demand creates the needed supply? In the course of a long academic life, I have developed Kindleberger's law of alternatives, based on historical examples. Often after extended policy debate, the powers that be end up doing both. In 1931 Keynes recommended tariffs, others devaluation or depreciation. Outcome: both. During World War II there was a vigorous Allied debate as to how best to push back German railheads from the Normandy beaches, whether by bombing marshaling yards, as the British called them, or bridges. Answer again: both. Nor did questioning a German prisoner of war, General des Transportwesen West, under Marshall von Runstedt, make clear which was better. American interrogators got the answer from Oberst (colonel) Hoffner they wanted - bridges - and the British theirs - marshaling yards. Robert Heilbroner has been a Classicist (Say's law?) and a Keynesian (Keynes's law?) and has been mildly infected with Marxism, but has never to my knowledge adopted the absolutist position of denying all truth to the polar opposite. In economic debates we have capitalism versus socialism; perfect markets with rational and informed suppliers and demanders versus market failure; monetarism versus Keynesianism; fundamentals (such as geography demography, technology, and perhaps history) versus institutions, path dependency; externalities, and occasional breakouts of herd behavior ending in financial crisis; free banking versus regulation and central banks; public choice versus markets (governments make mistakes but markets seldom do, and such mistakes as they rarely make are quickly corrected); centralization versus pluralism; rules versus decisions by authorities . . . One could go on. In international trade, which I taught before I learned the delight of historical economics, I was wont to say that the answer to every question in economics is, "It depends," and that it usually depended on the magnitude of the elasticities. President Truman sought one-armed economic advisers because of his unhappiness with the answer to his question "On the one hand, . . .; on the other hand, . . ." I have admiration approaching reverence for the thirty-third president of the United States, but I cannot endorse his pleas for an answer of "Yes," or perhaps "No," followed by a number. Let me illustrate this deeply philosophical or perhaps cowardly position with a few examples drawn from history. I skip capitalism versus socialism because most of us believe in the mixed economy, perhaps leaning slightly to one or the other, but in any case nowhere near the limits. Such, as I interpret it, is the Heilbroner take on Marxism since his infection at (by?) the New School. Centralization versus pluralism can be disposed of in two sentences, though I have a book of 100 pages on the issue: In quiet times, pluralism is better because it is more democratic. In crisis or on deep moral issues such as slavery or racism, some central authority is preferable. It is, however, difficult to

Gender Bending Party Reflection Essays

Gender Bending Party Reflection Essays Gender Bending Party Reflection Essay Gender Bending Party Reflection Essay We are living in a twisted world. When I first heard of this gender bending party, I did not feel special at all because I experience this gender bending process myself everyday in my life. However, this party did raise the old memories of my teenage days. I was a typical little girl when I was 3 or 4 years old. I behaved very gently and followed everything my parents said. I also dressed very girlish at that time. I remembered that I refused to wear trousers even we were off to the playground (I just could not believe that I wore a dress to climb up the monkey mountain) 2 years old. My hair was such a disaster! I did not wear dress (expect school uniform) since then until entering university. I kept this hair style for many years the recent year. For 9 years I was living a gender bending life. I was called little brother, mister whenever I was out in my casual wear. I am so used to be a boy or have a males identity that I would not feel embarrassing when the others misjudge my sex. My mother asked me if I needed a transgender operation or not. This is a very inspiring question indeed. I agree with some of the trans revolutionists that male / female norms are no longer objectively defined by the sex organs a person was born with, but subjective and socially constructed (LaBarbera, 2001). Here, the word socially is the focus. The interpretation of gender identity depends mostly on what society you are living in. Furthermore, the appearance cannot tell the whole story of a person. To me, wearing sports wear and clothing that are originally designed for men are just because I feel like to. : It is more convenience for me to dress that way. There is nothing to do with psychological abnormality. I like to be a girl. Nevertheless, the others are not thinking in the same way as I am. For many people, especially for my parents generation would think that you must be homosexual, bisexual or some kind of freak if you dress like the opposite sex. Boy meets girl, an experiment that carried out by a television broadcast company in England (2001). The participants of the program had to transform themselves into members of the opposite sex. They must walk, talk, dress, behave and think differently as they developed a character who they would play while living as the opposite sex. It was similar to our gender bending party, yet, more strict. People were free to join, but there was different stage of elimination. Girl to boy Our gender bending party was not that successful because the gender concept limited our creativity. Actually all of us should know what a typical boy / girl should like, yet, we were not open enough to play the new gender role that was different from what we were originally. We were not psychologically prepared well to join the party. From the Boy meets Girl program, I learnt that the most successful participant was the one who fear of nothing including the insecurity feeling that generated by him. The weakness of us was the characteristics of the gender were not emphasized enough. The Boy meets Girl program participants were to change from head to toe, including their body shape, voice, fashion taste and even behavior. To me, the most difficult thing to breakthrough in the party was to commit something that I was not. How can we face the public when we are not familiar to ourselves? How can we present ourselves? It was certainly not comfortable for us and the people would have contact with us. As I mentioned before, gender identity was closely related to social context. You wont feel strange if every boy wear dress in street. Actually, the history of cross-dressing stretches back a long way, to origins far removed from gay night clubs. In medieval Europe, women cross-dressed to overcome the gender hierarchy. Historical accounts reveal that abandoned wives often donned male disguise in order to live independent lives. The literature of the time reveals a fascination with cross-dressing. Some have speculated that Joan of Arc was a transvestite and there is even a legend of a female Pope. Cross-dressing was also found in China. During the Wei-Jin period, idle talk ( ) was popular among the upper class and the intellects. Only men could join idle talk. They would make up and wear beautiful garments like ladies to attend these idle talk meetings. However, the popularity of idle talk did not mean the disempowerment of machoism. It is not difficult to see why. First, under the patriarchal society, the power of male is always protected. Second, if men can successfully play the role as women, means they can take control of both sexes. They act or dress like women because they choose to be, on the other hand, women should dress properly what a women should dress. This was my interpretation of gender identity in Wei-Jin period. I do not think it is the case now in Hong Kong. Cross-dressing is always linked with fashion, uniqueness. In many fashion magazines, you can always see a male model dress very girlishly.

City of God Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words - 1

City of God - Essay Example Importance of education The youth gang involvement in urban crime is as a result of lack of education and lack of social and economic mobility. The Brazilians who engage in crime in the film are undoubtedly uneducated. Like other street occupants in the world cities, these youths in the city of God are held in low esteem. Their occupation is crime, begging and barrow-pushing among others (Bromley, 1982). The elite class refers to these people as ‘parasitic occupants’ with disguised unemployment (Bromley, 1982). These descriptions of the street occupants in most cities and especially the young youths are true, but they do not address the causes of these behavioral patterns in the city. In The City of God, the youth gang that develops engages in drug and crime acts. Most of these acts thrive because of poor planning of the government resources. Unequal distribution of resources, therefore, becomes a major cause of youth indulgence in crime (Bromley, 1982). This is because with unequal distribution of resources denies the poor basics such as education and hence lack of employment in the formal sector. Without education, youths spend most of their energetic years struggling for a daily bread and for them to survive, they engage in drug dealings and organized gang crime. For example, in the film, the viewers meet the impoverished thieves known as the ‘Tender trio’ consisted of Clipper, Goose and Shaggy. ... For example, younger boys led by Li’l Dice collide with them to rob occupants of a certain motel. In what can be seen as initiating Li’l into the crime gang, they leave him outside with a gun where he shoots motel inhabitants. At the scene, two members of the trio are killed. Lack of social and economic mobility Socio-economic mobility is the movement of people from one social class to another or one economic level to another. As discussed earlier, there is a strong correlation between education and one’s economic mobility. In The City of God, the young people are unable to secure jobs that would allow them to enhance their economic status (Bromley, 1982). The fact that the young people who form crime gangs in the movie are not employed is an indication that they are not educated. Their involvement in crime while young is a depiction of a sector of urban youths who are idling and surviving in hardships instead of being in school. This means even their parents are not well off or they are not there to support them. Therefore, lack of adequate planning by the government in educating its youths leads to them being denied the most effective and equal process that would enable them to improve their economic mobility. The results of such negligence are blatantly displayed in the movie as thriving of crime and drug business where youths are eliminating each other as a way of surviving. This is a long term effect in the society. Economic mobility starts with ones parents’ inability to take their children to school. Therefore, family background plays a great role in perpetual poverty in urban towns, and this exposes more youths to criminal acts and drug engagements. The evils

Frederick Douglas Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Frederick Douglas - Essay Example Largely, he did this through public speaking engagements and his writing. The first thing he published was the autobiographical Narrative of the Life of an American Slave in 1845. After which, he served as publisher of a newspaper, The North Star, before publishing his second novel, My Bondage and My Freedom, a decade later. While those works (which will be discussed later) were about his life, he later became a political activist in his pursuit to help people less advantaged than he. Surrounding the time that "Reconstruction" and "Appeal" were written, there was a lot of political activity, including the aforementioned Abolitionist Movement, which lasted from sometime in the 1830s, until about 1870. This movement should not be confused with the abolitionist movement started by feminists who wanted to end prostitution (arguing that prostitution was also a form of slavery). Instead, the Abolitionist Movement was fundamental in founding the Anti-Slave Society, which aimed at declaring that those enslaved should immediately become free. The Abolitionist Movement saw the end of slavery, but participants didn't consider its job complete. Once black people were free, they advocated for better education for them, so that men especially would get better jobs. If they could work, they'd be better able to support their families. The movement insisted on healthcare for freed slaves. It also offered assistance in helping family member locate other family members from whom they'd been separated during slavery. When the Fifteenth Amendment guaranteed African-American male suffrage, the Movement proper was over. In 1865, Congress had established the Freedman's Bureau. It helped with the tasks of education, healthcare, and jobs, and even the reunification of families. The Freedman's Bureau was especially helpful to refugees of the American Civil War. African-American women took up causes that affected black women at the time, and later, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was formed to aid all colored persons. All of this helped make Douglass the writer he became. When he wrote "Reconstruction," the Civil War had ended and the country was in a reconstructive state. The "Reconstruction" argument was that although the war had ended, there were still changes to be made. He wrote, "All that is necessary to be done is to make the government consistent with itself, and render the rights of the States compatible with the sacred rights of human nature" (para. 3). He was insisting that the government take a stand within each state, and remain consistent in supporting the rights of all people. He asked that citizens of the United States be able to move, interchangeably, throughout the states and have the same rights in each one. He finished his essay with the opinion that he was not the only person, nor were there only black people, who wanted equality for everyone. He wrote, "This great measure is sought as earnestly by loyal white men as by loyal blacks, and is needed alike by both. Let sound pol itical prescience but take the place of an unreasoning prejudice, and this will be done" (para. 10). In "An Appeal to Congress for Impartial Suffrage," Douglass' message was just as political, just as strong. His main focus was on the right to vote for African Americans. He asked Congress how they could have
